On his new EP Datter , Denmark-based producer CHLLNGR further explores the more cerebral, haunted pockets of "bass music" further honing in on his moody dub-imprinted sound. Spare and elegant, CHLLNGR's meticulously crafted cave dubs intertwine darker shades of R&B with progressive electronic/drone music and African rhythms. Late night listening suits CHLLNGR best, preferably in complete blackness soundtracking what you can't see lurking in the shadows.
While his debut album Haven featured his own soulful vocals, many of which were chopped and manipulated in a spectral, trance-inducing fashion, CHLLNGR takes a different approach with Datter often letting the vocal melodies ring out with clarity provide the lifeline throughout these minimal, often stark tracks. The four tracks that result find the talented producer perfecting a signature sound that stands apart from many of his peers.
